Sitges and the UOC debut a Master's degree in fantastic film

The year of the Festival’s 50th anniversary, these further studies reinforce the importance of genre in the current cultural landscape

The fantastic genre is enjoying a moment of splendor in all of its expressions. With this in mind, next term the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) will be debuting the Master’s degree Fantastic Film and Contemporary Fiction, born from its collaboration with the Sitges Film Festival.

One of the driving forces of today’s audiovisual sector is the fantastic genre. Many of the titles related to genre are now a part of the social cultural imaginary. Moreover, they are films that generate a very important turnover: Avatar grossed 2,788,000,000 dollars worldwide, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2,068,223,624 and Jurassic World, almost 1,700,000,000 dollars. In addition to a good screenplay, the key to success is genre’s constant innovation and professionals’ ability to come up with new ideas and projects. This is the primary reason for the implementation of the Master’s degree Fantastic Film and Contemporary Fiction, being launched jointly by the UOC along with the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.

For Jordi Sánchez-Navarro, director of Information and Communication Sciences Studies at the UOC and of this new Master’s degree, it is critical for professionals to constantly bring themselves up-to-date and reinvent themselves in order to make films that “surprise, scare, excite and thrill moviegoers. Likewise, they need to be able to create good screenplays and design the pre-production of a cinematic product”. The scholar also add that, at the same time, “They have to know the market for this genre well and be able to detect alternative forms of viewing.

The Master`s degree has been created to train professionals in “the analysis and development of fantastic genre and other contemporary fiction genre audiovisual projects”, explains Daniel Aranda, co-academic director of this college degree.

These further studies are aimed at professional profiles from audiovisual media, graduates in audiovisual communication or film, or with related degrees who want to develop a professional career in the areas of analysis, management, development or marketing of genre film or TV projects.

Teaching staff associated with the Sitges Film Festival

The Master’s degree is headed by Professor Jordi Sánchez-Navarro, who was Deputy Director of the Sitges Film Festival (2001-2004) and since 2005, has collaborated as a programmer of the Anima't animated film section. As executive co-director he will be relying on Mònica Garcia Massagué, Deputy Director of the Festival Foundation. The teaching staff will also include Àngel Sala, Director of the Sitges Film Festival, and Mike Hostench, Deputy Director, among other names related to the film competition.

The UOC considers this joint initiative to be an excellent opportunity to offer top level training in film and creativity. The Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is one of the most important cinematic events in Europe and boasts “clear international prestige”, Sánchez-Navarro explains, as certified by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood, that designated it as a festival qualified for its Oscars.

The signing of the agreement that has made the creation of this Master’s degree possible took place this morning at the Fàbrica Moritz Brewery in Barcelona, with signatures by the Mayor of Sitges, Miquel Forns, and the Dean of UOC, Josep A. Planell.

Those interested in attaining the Master’s degree will find more information, the curriculum and enrolment instructions on the website of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya: www.uoc.edu.
