The best Spanish fantastic cinema will be at Sitges 2012

Spanish fantastic cinema will be the protagonist with a capital “P” at the 45th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, to be held from the 4th to the 14th of October, as presented this morning by Ángel Sala, director of the festival, at the headquarters of the Academia of Cinematic Arts and Sciences in Madrid. Twelve Spanish films, nine of the Catalan, are a part of the official program, which will be released over the next few weeks.

An example of this commitment can be found in the Festival’s opening itself, featuring the European premiere of El Cuerpo (The Body), a Catalan production from Rodar y Rodar, Antena 3Films and TV3, that is Oriol Paulos’ directorial debut. Its cast includes two of the most outstanding names in present-day Spanish film: Belén Rueda and José Coronado. The promotion of younger talent continues with another debut feature film presented in the Official Selection: Insensibles, directed by Juan Carlos Medina. An A Contracorriente Films production, with its pledge to genre based on a historical premise.

Sitges 2012 also receives two established filmmakers, Óscar Aibar and Daniel Calparsoro. The first will be presenting the world premiere of the production El Bosc, a fantasy-horror movie starring Àlex Brendemühl, while the second, following his success with his latest genre proposals for television, will be participating with the world premiere of Invasor, an action and mystery thriller.

As proof of the progression of celebrities who have emerged from Sitges’ harvest over recent years, in a special event the Festival will be programming Lo Imposible (The Impossible), J. A. Bayona’s film destined to be one of the extraordinary events of the year on a worldwide level. Also, at a special screening and as an example of the work done by films schools and their rich harvest of talent, Sitges will be offering Escándalo Films’ production Animals, directed by Marçal Forés, one of this year’s most surprising debut films. In the documentary section it is also important to note the premiere of Leonora Carrington: El juego surrealista (Leonora Carrington: The Surrealist Game), by Javier Martín Domínguez, which will be competing in the No Ficción (Non-Fiction) section of the Nuevas Visiones (New Visions) category.

Sitges 2012’s program with a Spanish hallmark will also include Argento Dracula 3D, an Enrique Cerezo co-production, starring Thomas Kretschmann (Best Actor at Sitges 2007), Asia Argento and Unax Ugalde, among others.

Spanish cinema will be present in all the Festival’s sections, formats and facets, including approximately fifty Spanish-produced short films. And also in the parallel activities in the Noves Visions section, revolving around works from independent creators like Karlos Alastruey, Manfre & Iker Iturria or Borja Echevarría. The latter will be presenting his feature length film Qué pelo más guay. In addition, the Sitges Forum will be organizing a round table discussion about the importance of genre films for Spanish cinema in recent years and the Sitges Festival’s role as a receiving antenna for new talent and a driving force of the Catalan industry since the late nineties.

Regarding its relationship with the Spanish audiovisual sector, the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is pleased to be reinforcing its collaboration with the Entity of Management of Audiovisual Producers’ Rights (Egeda), through the VeoSitges service for the viewing of Spanish films present at the Festival by professionals who request it.
